Inside the newly restored Charles Baird Carillon

Photos from the re-opening of the newly restored Charles Baird Carillon (the bell tower at UM). The tower was originallty constructed in 1936 but the original bells and keyboard were removed in a 1974 remodel to make space for an additional octave. Now, after a year long renovation, the original 1936 bells and keyboard have been restored to their original locations in the tower. There are a total of 55 bells weighing in at a total of 43 tons. The largest bell weighs 12 tons and strikes the hour while the smallest bell weighs 16.5 pounds. One of only 23 grand carillons in the world, the Baird carillon is the 3rd heaviest. http://www.montage.umich.edu/2011/06/silent-no-more/
